Desktop Pets is a small Mac novelty by Jonathyn Bet'nct that turns the desktop into a playground for animated virtual pets, in the spirit of the classic Windows Neko cat. Released in 2001 by Kreative Software, the package ships with a default cat and lets users craft additional creatures in any paint program.
How the pets work
Each pet is a sprite that wanders, sleeps and reacts on top of whatever windows are open, much like Neko but tailored to Mac OS conventions and the application palette of the late Classic era.
Make your own
Beyond the bundled cat, Desktop Pets exposes a simple image-based format so any user with a paint program can author new pets or characters - an early example of user-generated desktop toys on the Mac.
Builds and compatibility
The Info-Mac archive carries 68k, PowerPC and Mac OS X-native builds of Desktop Pets 1.0, covering the full hardware spread of Mac users still active in 2001.
