Desktop Pets is a small classic Mac novelty in the lineage of Neko: it turns the Finder desktop into a playground for animated creatures that scamper across windows and chase the cursor. Released by Kreative Software for PowerPC Macs around 2001, it is a lightweight desk accessory rather than a full game.
What it does
Once launched, sprite-based pets roam over the desktop and the front Finder window, reacting to mouse movement. The pack ships with a cat in the Neko tradition, and the program is designed so additional pets can be added.
Custom pets
According to the Kreative Software documentation, new pets can be authored in any standard Mac paint program by drawing the required animation frames, letting users extend the menagerie without programming.
Platform notes
The 1.0 build targets PowerPC Macs running classic Mac OS. It runs in the Classic environment on early Mac OS X and under emulators such as SheepShaver, but is not a Carbon or native OS X application.
