PuzzleGetter is a small, single-purpose Macintosh utility by Dan Schellenberg that downloads daily crossword puzzles with a single mouse click. Each puzzle is saved in Across Lite (.puz) format into a folder of the user's choice, with the desktop as the default destination.
One job, done well
The author describes PuzzleGetter as incredibly simple, with one and only one purpose: pulling crosswords down from the web and dropping them into a local folder ready to solve.
File naming
Saved files follow a predictable pattern such as NP_5-14-2003.puz, where a short prefix identifies the puzzle's source and the date stamp indicates when it was downloaded.
Companion reader required
PuzzleGetter does not display puzzles itself. To open the .puz files it fetches, you need an Across Lite crossword reader, which the author notes is freely available.
