About

Doctor is the Info-Mac distribution of Game Doctor 1.0 (68K) by Illume Software, a hint, cheat, and patch viewer for the classic Mac that organises game help into self-contained "prescriptions." The 68K build ships separately from the PowerPC archive but reads the same prescription files.

Concept and audience

Game Doctor is pitched as "the largest collection of hints, cheats, walkthroughs, and other game enhancements" for the Mac. Version 1.0 ships with over 300 prescriptions edited for consistency, plus more than 40 prescriptions Illume claims are not available anywhere else. The bundle is aimed at adventure and RPG players who want progressive hints rather than spoiler-heavy walkthroughs.

Prescription types

The viewer supports 11 prescription types. Text prescriptions carry styled text with embedded sounds, pictures, and Internet links; Patch prescriptions auto-locate target files, warn of incompatibilities, and back up before patching; and Progressive Walkthrough prescriptions reveal hints incrementally in the same spirit as the Universal Hint System, from subtle clue to complete solution.

Engine and packaging

This archive is the 68K build (a separate doctor-ppc.hqx covers PowerPC). Prescriptions are auto-compressed to keep file size down, and the open authoring format lets users build their own prescriptions with simple editors. Comprehensive online help and Apple Help Balloons are included; pricing is shareware-tier.

Author and contact

Game Doctor is published by Illume Software (Provo, Utah; illumesoft@aol.com), the same studio behind the UHS for MacOS reader. Inside Mac Games later acquired the Game Doctor source from Illume to keep the resource alive after the studio went dormant.
