Em 40 Demo is the demo build of Empire Master 4.0, the first fully OS X-native release of Christopher Eliot's long-running conquer-the-world strategy wargame. Originally written before Macs had colour monitors and well before the WWW, the author cheerfully warns it is 'highly addictive and should be avoided at all costs.'
Strategic gameplay
Empire Master is a turn-based strategy wargame in which the player builds and commands an empire across a large procedurally laid-out map. Multiple rule sets effectively make it many games in one, and a system of automatic commands lets the player delegate routine orders and focus on higher-level strategy.
Map sizes
The full release supports maps from 25x25 up to 255x255 tiles. The demo version is restricted to smaller maps, giving prospective players a feel for the rule sets and interface before registering.
Registration and distribution
This build added registration by mail or via PayPal at the time of release. The demo was distributed through Info-Mac as em-40-demo.hqx and through the author's site at empiremaster.com.
Author
Empire Master is the work of Christopher Eliot (cre@chriseliot.com), who has maintained the game across many Mac generations from the pre-colour era through OS X.
