Scenario Maker 3D DR1 is the Developer Release 1 of the level-authoring tool for Sword Dream 3D, a three-dimensional adventure gaming system for the Macintosh by Luca Accomazzi (akko@enter.it) and the Comenius team. It is freeware and was distributed alongside the final beta of Sword Dream 3D itself in the mid 1990s.
Purpose
The application is used to author the 3D environments that Sword Dream 3D loads at runtime. Where Sword Dream 3D is positioned by its authors as a think-first, act-later adventure rather than a shoot-em-up, Scenario Maker 3D is the companion tool that lets designers build the rooms, corridors, and props those adventures take place in.
Relation to Sword Dream 3D
Sword Dream 3D presents its world in true three-dimensional perspective, comparable in look to Marathon, Doom, or Descent, but its design emphasis is on puzzle and exploration play stretched across days rather than minutes. Both Sword Dream 3D and Scenario Maker were planned for release in English, French, and Italian.
Hardware requirements
Scenario Maker 3D DR1 requires a 68040 or PowerPC Macintosh with System 7 and at least a 14-inch monitor running in 256 colors. The README inside the package documents the 3D feature set; a full-length manual was offered separately in Microsoft Word 5.1 format from Comenius's FTP site.
Distribution
The release is freeware and may be freely redistributed. It was posted to Info-Mac as scenario-maker-3d-dr1.hqx, with subsequent developer releases (DR2 and beyond) following on the same channel as the engine matured.
