Heroes of the Black Tower is a fantasy adventure scenario for Luca Accomazzi's Sword Dream 3D engine, released in 1997 as the final v1.0 build replacing an earlier public beta. Sword Dream 3D is the Comenius-published 3D successor to the 1993 Sword Dream RPG system, and Black Tower was one of its first full plug-in adventures.
Think first, act later
Although the engine renders the world in real-time 3D in the style of Marathon, Doom, or Descent, the developer explicitly distances Sword Dream 3D from shoot-em-up gameplay. The pitch is a "think-first, act-later" RPG: exploration, riddles, magic, and turn-aware combat layered over the 3D viewport rather than reflex-driven first-person shooting.
The scenario
Black Tower drops the player into a complete fantasy adventure built with the Sword Dream 3D scenario tools - new monsters, spells, objects, buildings, traps, riddles, characters, and music, all packaged as a single plug-in datafile that the engine loads on launch. The scenario is freely redistributable on the internet, on CD-ROM, or via BBSes.
Engine and scenario tools
Sword Dream 3D 2.1 is required to run the scenario; the engine is distributed separately. Comenius shipped the scenario-construction toolkit free of charge, allowing community members to build new monsters, spells, items, traps, music, and architecture for the engine. Several other community scenarios were listed at www.comenius.com/dream/scenarios.html.
Provenance
Author Luca Accomazzi (akko@enter.it), publishing through Comenius, uploaded the scenario to Info-Mac in mid-1997. The Sword Dream codebase was open-sourced in 2022 and republished on GitHub. This node represents the original v1.0 scenario submission; the sibling node sd-3d-black-tower mirrors the v1.0.1 bug-fix re-upload of the same scenario.
