About

Virtual Maze Book 2.0.1 is a maze generator by Robert Schenk, released in 1997 as a free upgrade to the earlier Maze Book Lite. Although it can solve mazes on screen, the program's real strength is producing high-quality printed mazes - the same engine Schenk used to design two maze books published by Dover.

From Maze Book Lite to 2.0.1

The original Lite release in May 1997 shipped with two limited maze-generation methods. Version 2.0.1 adds a more robust algorithm intended to give enough variety to satisfy all but the most rabid maze fans, according to the author's own Info-Mac upload notes.

Built for paper, not just pixels

Schenk emphasises that Virtual Maze Book was designed primarily for printing rather than on-screen play. Bundled specialised maze fonts allow the mazes to render at full printer resolution, which is what made the program practical as a typesetting tool for his Dover collections.

Free version and upgrades

The Info-Mac release is the free edition. Instructions for upgrading to a more complex commercial version of the package are included in the readme. Contact and documentation pointers in the original archive list Schenk at bobs@kagi.com and the project page at ingrimayne.saintjoe.edu/Maze.html.
