Boat Wars is a Classic Mac shareware naval combat game distributed in BinHex form during the System 7 era. Players maneuver vessels and exchange fire across an overhead playfield, in the lineage of turn-based artillery duels and tank-style shooters that thrived on the Mac shareware scene.
Gameplay
Two-boat duels emphasize positioning, range estimation, and timing. Hits and misses are resolved per shot, with limited ammunition and damage state encouraging careful engagement rather than continuous fire.
Shareware era
Like many small Mac titles of its day, Boat Wars circulated as a compressed BinHex archive on info-mac and CD-ROM compilations, asking a modest registration fee from regular players.
System notes
The package targets black-and-white and early color Macs running System 6 or 7. The minimal asset footprint kept it friendly to floppy distribution and slower 68k machines.
Preservation
The Info-Mac mirror preserved Boat Wars alongside other small games of its kind. Definitive author credits and a Macintosh Garden listing are not currently available, so further metadata corrections from collectors are welcome.
