Step On It! Demo is the playable demonstration version of Tim Hunt's 1996 Macintosh-exclusive puzzle platformer published by Casady & Greene. The full game won Macworld's Best Arcade Game in their 1997 Game Hall of Fame; this demo offers a slice of the same brick-building, key-collecting gameplay across a limited set of levels.
Gameplay
The player controls a robotic character who navigates side-on stages by laying down and dissolving blocks. Levels demand careful sequencing: trap baddies inside fresh bricks, build bridges to unreachable loot, and collect keys to open the exit. The mechanics are loosely in the lineage of Lode Runner with extra puzzle layering.
What's In the Demo
The demo ships as Step_On_It_Demo_Installer.sit and weighs roughly 1.8 MB. It exposes a representative subset of the full game's levels and intro material so players can sample the controls and difficulty curve before purchasing the retail Casady & Greene release.
System Requirements
The demo runs on classic Mac OS 7.0 through Mac OS 8.1, with a 256-color 640x480 display and a few megabytes of RAM. It runs cleanly under Basilisk II or Mini vMac II for modern emulation.
Why It Matters
Step On It! is one of the most fondly remembered original Mac arcade-puzzle titles of the late 1990s. The demo is the most accessible way to experience the design without tracking down the boxed Casady & Greene release.
