Gravity Wells is a 2006 OpenGL puzzle/arcade game by Jorge Arroyo Gonzalez, published under the Makasoft label. The player guides a small ship indirectly with the mouse, working through single-screen puzzles set against trippy backgrounds and an atmospheric soundtrack.
Gameplay
Each level is a self-contained puzzle. Rather than steering the ship directly, the player attracts and repels it by pointing the mouse, threading the craft through gravitic hazards toward the level goal. Solutions reward timing and restraint over twitch reflexes.
Presentation
The OpenGL engine renders neon vector-style fields, glowing particles, and warped backdrops that gave the game its trippy reputation among Mac OS X indie players. The accompanying chiptune-flavored music loops are part of the appeal.
System Requirements
Gravity Wells ships as a Universal Binary covering both PowerPC and Intel Macs, and is compatible with Mac OS X 10.2.6 through 10.5.8. The mouse-only control scheme makes it equally at home on a tower G4 or an early Intel iMac.
About This Build
This entry is the base GravityWells release without the bundled level editor. The companion editor build, used to author or modify puzzle layouts, is preserved separately on Macintosh Garden as a sibling entry.
