EV_$hack is a small freeware applet by Greger J. Olson that edits an Ambrosia Software Escape Velocity pilot file to give a beginning player a starting balance of $100K or more. The intent is to let new captains skip the slow shuttle phase and upgrade to a more interesting ship as soon as they reach a system with shipyard facilities.
What it does
Patches a constant credits value into a saved Escape Velocity pilot file. It does not add to the existing balance; it overwrites the field, so any current credits are replaced with the hack's value.
How to use it
Operates on pilot files at rest on disk rather than any pilot currently loaded by Escape Velocity. The author advises closing the game before patching a pilot.
Caveats
Use at your own risk. Pilot file formats can change between Escape Velocity releases, and unsupported edits may corrupt a pilot.

Freeware. The author explicitly permits inclusion on any CD-ROM compilations.
