EV Update is a patch installer for Ambrosia Software's Escape Velocity, the seminal 1996 top-down space trading and combat game by Matt Burch. The patch brings an existing Escape Velocity install up to a newer point release rather than installing the full game, and is meant to be run against an already-licensed copy.
What It Patches
The updater targets the original Escape Velocity application, the smaller and earlier sibling to Escape Velocity Override and Escape Velocity Nova. It typically lifts an installed copy from version 1.0.3 or 1.0.4 to a later 1.0.x release, refreshing the game binary and resource files without touching pilot files or third-party plug-ins.
Why It Existed
Ambrosia issued these incremental updaters during the late 1990s to address bugs, balance issues, and Mac OS compatibility quirks reported on the Ambrosia message boards. Distributing a small patch instead of a full installer reduced download time over dial-up and let registered users stay current without reinstalling.
Compatibility
The updater is a classic Mac OS application and expects an existing Escape Velocity folder containing the original game and its data files. It runs under System 7.5 through Mac OS 9, on 68k or PowerPC hardware, and modifies files in place.
Curator Note
This entry preserves the standalone updater rather than the full game. Anyone looking to play Escape Velocity from scratch should pair this patch with the corresponding base installer kept under Escape Velocity in the archive.
