Despite the cryptic filename, "bg-ger" is not a backgammon game. It is the German-language plug-in for BabyGames 2.0 on the Mac, a small add-on file that drops into the BabyGames Plug-Ins folder and enables the German1 language pack inside the host application.
What It Actually Is
The slug "bg-ger" is short for "BabyGames German." The download contains a single language folder; users place it inside BabyGames' Plug-Ins folder and restart the program, then choose German1 in the plug-in selection window. By itself it does nothing, it only extends the existing English1 pack that ships with BabyGames.
The Host Program: BabyGames
BabyGames is a non-competitive early-learning toy aimed at children aged eighteen months to four years. It teaches recognition of the alphabet, numbers one to twenty, basic geometric shapes, colors and animals, each with accompanying sounds, and is designed to be encouraging rather than scored. The German plug-in lets German-speaking families use the same activities in their own language.
Distribution and Pricing
BabyGames itself was sold for fifteen US dollars with a time-limited but fully functional demo, and was published for both Mac and Windows. The German plug-in was distributed separately and freely as a companion download, contributed via dstoll@atlcom.net.
System Requirements
The plug-in inherits BabyGames' own requirements: System 7.1 or later, an 030 processor or better, 3 MB of RAM on 030/040 hardware (6-8 MB on PowerPC), 6.6 MB of disk space and a 256-color display. Virtual memory or RAM Doubler are acceptable for hitting the memory target.
