The Smiths character pack is an add-on resource set for Freeverse Software's Hearts Deluxe, the seminal Macintosh card game first released in 1994 by Ian Lynch Smith. Drop the pack into the Hearts Deluxe folder and three new opponents replace the default puppets at the table, each with its own portrait art and animated reactions.
What it adds
Hearts Deluxe shipped with a small cast of computer opponents, but its plug-in architecture lets users swap in alternate "puppets" that drive the table commentary and reactions. The Smiths pack is one of these community and Freeverse-supplied character sets, themed around members of the Smith family.
How it installs
The pack is a small resource file rather than a standalone game. Once Hearts Deluxe is installed, the new characters appear in the player-selection list alongside the original cast and can be mixed and matched with other puppet packs.
Why it matters
Hearts Deluxe was Freeverse's first product and helped launch a long line of Mac card games. Optional character packs like Smiths kept the game feeling fresh through the late System 7 and Mac OS 8 era and demonstrate the modular, community-friendly design Freeverse cultivated from the start.
Compatibility
The pack requires a working install of the original Hearts Deluxe (68k, System 7 through Mac OS 8.1) and inherits its display and memory needs. It runs cleanly under SheepShaver, Basilisk II, and Executor when paired with the host game.
