About

Classic Gin Rummy is a 1996 shareware Gin Rummy implementation for Classic Mac OS, originally developed by Soul Fry Software and later distributed by Freeverse. This entry covers the early 1.0.x releases that shipped as a small 256-colour application for System 7-class machines, with the standard knock/gin scoring rules and a single computer opponent at the table.

Gameplay

The player draws from the stock or discard pile, melds runs and sets, and either knocks at ten or fewer deadwood points or goes gin for the bonus. Hands are short and built around hand-management decisions rather than animation; the AI plays a competent rule-of-thumb game that is forgiving for newcomers but exploitable by experienced Gin players.

Engine and technical changes

The 1.0.2 build targets System 7 with a 256-colour display and runs natively on 68k as well as PowerPC hardware via emulation. Sounds and the card back can be customised from the preferences dialog, but the playfield itself is fixed and the application footprint is deliberately tiny by the standards of the era.

Development and release

Soul Fry Software released the original Classic Gin Rummy as $14.95 shareware with a launch-limited trial. Freeverse later picked up distribution and would publish a substantially revised v3.0 several years later. With the original publisher long defunct, Macintosh Garden lists a circulating registration code so archived copies remain fully usable.
