Classic Gin Rummy is the Freeverse-published Gin Rummy game for Classic Mac OS, with this catalogue entry covering the later v3.0 release that targets Mac OS 8.1 through 9.x. It supersedes the earlier Soul Fry Software 1.0.x line with reworked themes, additional rule variants, and PowerPC-native code, while staying close to the original's lean, single-table presentation.
Gameplay
The player faces one computer opponent across a standard Gin Rummy hand: draw, meld, lay off, and either knock or call gin. Version 3.0 adds selectable rule sets — No-Knock Gin, Regular Gin, Oklahoma and Strict Hoyle — alongside customisable sounds and visual themes, letting the same engine cover the most common house rules.
Engine and technical changes
The 3.0 build is a Carbon-friendly PowerPC application that requires Mac OS 8.1 or later and ships with multiple swappable theme packs. The card-handling and AI core was rewritten over the 1.0.x base, with smoother animations and modernised dialogs in line with the rest of the Freeverse late-90s card-game lineup.
Development and release
Distributed as $14.95 shareware with a 30-launch trial, Classic Gin Rummy 3.0 was sold through Freeverse's web store before the company exited Mac shareware. It is preserved on Macintosh Garden and Macintosh Repository, and Garden's curator notes include the circulating registration credentials since the publisher is no longer active.
