Wheel of Fortune is a HyperCard adaptation of the long-running TV game show, originally published on a MacAddict magazine cover CD and later released as freeware by Harley N. Bradley. Players spin the wheel, guess letters, buy vowels, and try to solve word puzzles, with sound effects pulled from the show's official site at the time.
Gameplay
The stack follows the familiar television format: a spinning wheel assigns dollar amounts to consonants, vowels can be purchased from accumulated winnings, and the winner is whoever solves the puzzle. Animated characters and sampled audio give it the feel of the broadcast version on a Mac desktop.
Editor for custom puzzles
The download ships with a companion editor that lets players assemble their own puzzle sets. New categories and phrases can be authored and dropped in for replay value beyond the bundled board.
System requirements
Because it is a HyperCard project, the game needs HyperCard or the free HyperCard Player to run. It is comfortable on Mac Plus-class hardware and up, across System 6 through Mac OS 9, on both 68k and PowerPC machines.
Distribution history
The release notes describe it as originally shareware that was later opened up as freeware once it had circulated on the MacAddict CD, which is how many users first encountered it.
