Romi is a Macintosh rummy simulation written by Gerard Brochu and first released in 1994. It is played with two standard 52-card decks plus two wildcards, and lets the player face the computer across several difficulty levels. Multiple revisions appeared through the mid-1990s, ranging from a System 6 monochrome build to a color System 7 release.
Gameplay
The object of the game is to form valid groups by laying down either three or more consecutive cards of the same suit, or three or more cards of the same rank across different suits. Wildcards stand in for missing cards in either kind of meld, in keeping with traditional rummy rules.
Versions
Romi shipped in a long sequence of revisions, including 1.2, 1.2.1, 1.5.2, 1.7, 1.7.1, and a 2.0 release. The 1.7.1 build runs on System 6.0.4 with a monochrome display, while 2.0 targets System 7 with color and is best viewed at 800 by 600 or larger.
Author
Romi was authored by Gerard Brochu and distributed as Macintosh shareware. It is a 68k application and runs cleanly under modern Classic Mac emulators alongside its sibling card-game releases.
Emulation
The monochrome 1.7.x line is well suited to Mini vMac, while the 2.0 color build runs under Basilisk II or SheepShaver with a color depth set to at least 8 bits.
