Even Land is a HyperCard freeware program by Joe Hammons (hammo@softcom.net), distributed through Info-Mac as evenland.hqx. Aimed at children of all ages, it casts the computer as an opponent in a difficult take-away game and asks the player to outwit it -- a small, focused exercise in strategic thinking dressed up in HyperCard's friendly interface.
Gameplay
The game is a take-away contest: players and the computer alternate removing items from a pile under fixed rules, and the goal is to leave the opponent in a losing position. The author describes it as difficult, so winning consistently rewards careful planning rather than guesswork.
Audience
Even Land is pitched at children of all ages and frames the contest as a way to strengthen thinking skills. The HyperCard presentation makes the rules approachable for newcomers while the underlying combinatorial game stays interesting for adults.
Requirements
Because the stack is HyperCard-based, the free HyperCard Player (or a full HyperCard installation) is required to run it. No additional system extensions or special hardware are called for.
Distribution
The original submission to Info-Mac was packaged as EvenLand.sit, then re-encoded as the BinHex file evenland.hqx under info-mac/game/ for archive distribution.
This file is part of the MacTrove archive. See the Thank You page for the upstream mirrors we rely on. It is BinHex encoded — use The Unarchiver to decode it.
