Cryptograms! is a Macintosh puzzle program from Country Road Software that lets you create and solve encoded quotations in an attractive, intuitive format. Authored by high school English teacher Mark Jordan, it sits alongside its siblings Anacrostics! and Droplines! as a quotation-driven word puzzle suite for classroom and casual play.
Gameplay
Each puzzle presents a quotation in which every letter has been substituted by another. Players deduce the cipher one letter at a time, watching the rest of the quote update across the board as guesses propagate.
Origins
Cryptograms! was originally designed as a tool for teachers to generate novel and entertaining classroom materials, then expanded with on-screen play modules so students and home users could solve puzzles directly on the Mac.
The Country Road Suite
The program belongs to a small family of word-puzzle titles by Mark Jordan, all built around quotations: Cryptograms!, Anacrostics!, and Droplines!.
