GnuChessMac 4.0 is a free Macintosh chess program derived from GNU Chess 4.0 and distributed under the GNU Public License. The port was originally done by Dan Oetting with help from Tom Gerardy and Erich Oetting, with this 4.0 release packaged for the Mac by Rolf Exner.
Lineage
The Mac interface is based on the version 3.0 Mac port done by Airy Andre. Dan Oetting's work started from GNU Chess 4.0 but made many changes to the search routines, openings and transposition table, originally released as 4.0b5.
What 4.0 adds
This release by Rolf Exner adds Apple Event support, move output in standard algebraic notation, and minor tweaks to window sizes, positions, and command keys, refining the user-facing behavior on top of the upstream engine improvements.
Use as an engine
The Apple Event support allows GnuChessMac to be used as a chess engine driven by other Mac programs such as ExaChess and ExaChess Lite, in addition to standalone play.
License and source
Like upstream GNU Chess, the program is free software under the GNU General Public License, and was distributed via Info-Mac under game/brd/ as gnu-chess-mac-40.hqx.
