ChessMate is a 1993 chess program for the classic Macintosh, published by Quade Publishing Company. It offers one-player, two-player, and self-play modes with 255 selectable skill levels, plus standard quality-of-life features such as undo and redo and a full move log kept in both English and algebraic notation.
Modes of play
The program supports human-vs-computer, human-vs-human at the same Mac, and a self-play mode where the engine works through a game on its own, useful for studying openings or watching the engine analyze.
Skill levels
With 255 skill steps, ChessMate covers a wide range from casual learners to more experienced club-level players, letting the user dial in a comfortable challenge.
Move recording
Every move is captured in standard chess notation, with both English descriptive and algebraic forms available. Players can step backward and forward through the recorded game to review, undo mistakes, or replay sequences.
