Super Othello

Super Othello is a polished Mac implementation of the classic Othello/Reversi board game from Norway's Yellow Lemon Software, distributed as a fat binary with eight levels of computer intelligence and a re-rendered 3D look that pushed the board game well past its 1980s ancestors.

Play modes

Players can take on a human opponent, challenge the Mac at any of eight strength settings, or simply watch the Mac play against itself. The 2.3 release introduced the ability to undo moves, auto-skip forced passes, invert the board, and switch sides mid-game with the opponent.

Look and feel

Version 2.3 is a top-to-bottom visual overhaul: completely new 3D-rendered 16- and 8-bit graphics replace the earlier flat artwork, the interface was redesigned to be less cluttered, and a higher degree of threading makes the application feel noticeably faster and more responsive.

System requirements

Super Othello 2.3 needs any reasonably fast Mac (an 030 processor is recommended), 1800 KB of RAM, and a display capable of at least 256 colours. The release is fully compatible with Mac OS 8 and is distributed as $15 shareware; registration details ship with the program.
