GNU Chess Gaeilge is an Irish-language (Gaeilge) port of GNU Chess for the classic Macintosh, based on the version 3.0.2 codebase of the long-running Mac port maintained by Dan Oetting and Tom Gerardy. It bundles the standard GNU Chess engine and Mac front end with menus, dialogs, and prompts translated into Irish.
About GNU Chess on the Mac
GNU Chess Mac is a native classic Mac wrapper around the GNU Project's free chess engine, originally brought to the Mac in the early 1990s by Dan Oetting and later maintained by Tom Gerardy.
The Gaeilge port
This release localizes the version 3.0.2 build into Irish, replacing the English interface strings while keeping the underlying engine and gameplay unchanged.
System requirements
Targets System 7.0 through Mac OS 9 on both 68k and PowerPC Macintoshes. The download is distributed as a small BinHex (.hqx) archive of roughly 199 KB.
Provenance
Hosted on Macintosh Garden alongside the other GNU Chess Mac downloads; the Gaeilge build was added to the Garden in 2022.
