Droids is a 1996 strategy game from Quarter Note Software, an updated and supercharged take on the classic computer game Daleks. Set in 2048, the player guides a lone human across a grid of progressively smarter androids, supported by clan members in the long fight to become the Savior of Terra.
Gameplay
Each level drops the player onto a top-down grid swarming with droids that close in one step at a time. Careful movement, terrain, and timing turn the swarm against itself, with classic and Super Droids modes scaling the strategic challenge.
Authoring and Engine
Droids was developed by Quarter Note Software and ships as a 68k and PowerPC build. Registration unlocks the Super Droids mode, a common shareware pattern of the era.
System Requirements
The game targets a 68020 or better (68030 recommended) under System 7.0 or later, with Sound Manager 3.0+, a 256-color or greyscale display at 640x480 or higher, 5 MB of RAM, and roughly 1.5 MB of disk space.
Compatibility
Original 68k and PPC binaries run on period Macs and under SheepShaver emulation, making Droids straightforward to revisit on modern hardware through a Classic Mac OS environment.
