MacChess is a solid, long-running chess program for the Classic Mac OS by Wim van Beusekom, first released in 1995 and developed through a 5.x line for PowerPC. It offers a clean Mac-native board interface, a competent playing engine, and localizations in several languages including English, Dutch, and Spanish.
Gameplay
Standard tournament chess against a computer opponent, with the usual move legality, check and checkmate detection, and basic game management. Pieces are dragged or clicked into place on a Mac-styled board.
Versions
The MacChess archive spans v2.0 (1995) through v5.0.1, with both 68k and PowerPC builds. Localized editions exist for Dutch and Spanish (Esp) alongside the English releases.
System requirements
MacChess requires a Macintosh with at least a 68020 processor and Mac OS 7. PowerPC builds in the 5.x line target later System 7, Mac OS 8, and Mac OS 9.
Author
Wim van Beusekom developed MacChess as freeware over many years, contributing one of the more durable native chess programs of the Classic Mac era.
