Backgammon Lite v1.2 is a freeware Classic Mac program by alois at conestoga.net that lets two players play backgammon on a single Macintosh. There is no computer opponent and no built-in dice, so a real pair of dice and a printed rule sheet are needed to round out the experience.
Two-player only
The program is strictly hot-seat: it requires two human players sharing one Mac. Without an AI opponent, the software focuses purely on representing the board state for two people sitting together.
No dice included
The author intentionally omitted a dice feature, reasoning that rolling physical dice is part of the experience of playing backgammon and that simulating them on screen would take something away from the game.
What it replaces
Backgammon Lite stands in for the clutter of a physical board and pieces, leaving the players to supply the dice and the rules. It is preserved in the Info-Mac game archive as backgammon-lite-12.hqx.
