Trainspotters Puzzle is a fitword crossword generator and solver for the classic Macintosh, written by Tore Mortensen and distributed as shareware via Info-Mac. It builds fitword puzzles from any chosen word source, including plain text files or computer-generated 'license plates', and lets you solve them on screen.
What is a fitword?
A fitword puzzle gives you all the solution words up front; the challenge is fitting each word into the correct slot in the grid. Trainspotters Puzzle generates these grids automatically from a word list you supply.
Generate, solve, and print
You can solve puzzles directly in the application or print them via SimpleText for solving on paper. Registered users gain access to complete solution keys and can use the program as a tool for constructing traditional crosswords as well.
Solitaire fitwords variant
Later versions add a solitaire fitwords mode, a single-player variant of the original puzzle that can also be solved on screen, and enlarged solving windows with bigger fonts for readability.
Universal binary for the era
The application ships as a fat binary, running natively on both 68K Macs and PowerPC machines, and requires System 7 or later. It is one of the few dedicated crossword construction tools for Classic Mac OS.
