About

MacChess 5.01 (German edition) is a free, master-strength chess program for the PowerPC Macintosh by Wim van Beusekom, with menus and displays localized into German. By the late 1990s MacChess 2.5 alone had become the most-downloaded title in AOL's Mac Board Games area, with over 26,000 downloads, and the 5.x line carried that lineage forward.

Engine and Strength

The reworked 5.01 engine finds forced mates faster, ships with an opening book expanded by nearly 12,000 positions, and roughly doubles its score on one standard endgame test. In the 1997 Aegon Computer-Human tournament it defeated a master and a near-master while running on a 200 MHz 603-based Mac.

Features

Includes accurate "Mate in N" announcements, independent or linked Black and White time controls, sudden-death and increment levels, a large-board option with Classic and American sets, EPD/PGN copy-paste and read/write, continual analysis, hint, takeback, save/load, animated playback with VCR-style controls, and five piece sets.

Learning Aids

Ships with "Easy" levels and a dedicated "Learning Chess" file aimed at beginners, alongside an analysis log for studying your own games.

Requirements

Power Macintosh, System 7 or later, and 5.4 MB of free RAM. PowerPC-only; the 68K branch remained at MacChess 2.5.1. Free, but not for resale or CD-ROM redistribution without permission (Info-Mac CD-ROM use is granted).
