MacTrek is a 1987 Star Trek strategy game for the Macintosh by Travis Butler. It belongs to the long lineage of text-and-grid Star Trek games that started on mainframes in the early 1970s, recast here for the early Mac with a windowed interface for tactical starship navigation and combat against Klingon adversaries.
Gameplay
Players command a Federation starship, scanning sectors of the galaxy, plotting warp and impulse moves, and engaging Klingon vessels. Strategic positioning, shield management, and targeting drive each engagement.
Author and Year
MacTrek was written by Travis Butler and released in 1987, placing it firmly in the early black-and-white System 4/5 era of Mac gaming.
System Requirements
The game targets 68k Macintosh hardware and is reported to run from System 1 through Mac OS 9, with confirmed operation on Mac OS 9.2.2. Compatibility with Classic mode under Mac OS X is untested.
Emulation
MacTrek can be run today under Mini vMac, where it has been verified to launch and play in System 6 environments.
