Meta File Editor is a classic Macintosh utility for inspecting and editing the metadata fields that the Mac OS attaches to every file: the four-character type and creator codes, Finder flags, and related HFS attributes that determine which application opens a document and how the Finder presents it.
Type and creator codes
Classic Mac OS identified files by a pair of four-character codes - the file type and the creator application - rather than by extension. Meta File Editor exposes these codes so that orphaned documents can be reattached to the right application or remapped to a new one.
Finder flags
The editor also reaches the Finder info bits that control properties such as the invisible flag, bundle bit, locked state, and stationery status, which normally require a tool like ResEdit or FileTyper to change.
Use cases
Typical uses include rescuing files that lost their metadata after a network or cross-platform transfer, batch-fixing archives downloaded as raw data, and preparing files for older applications that key strictly off type and creator.
Platform
A small classic Mac OS utility distributed as shareware or freeware and preserved through community archives like Macintosh Garden.
