Beasts and Monsters is a small Mac shareware fantasy game from the long tail of the System 7 era. Like many single-author titles of its kind it slipped out via Info-Mac and user-group disks rather than commercial distribution, and metadata for it is thin on the major preservation archives -- the binary survives more reliably than its readme.
Theme and genre
The title points squarely at fantasy combat, putting it in the same broad family as the bestiary-style RPG companions and turn-based fantasy duels common to Mac shareware of the early-to-mid 1990s. Surviving uploads suggest a turn-based or menu-driven combat loop rather than a real-time arcade game.
Macintosh presentation
The interface follows the standard Mac shareware conventions of the period: a single playfield window, dialog-driven menus for actions, monochrome or low-color sprite art, and an About box carrying the shareware registration prompt.
Compatibility
Beasts and Monsters is a 68k Macintosh binary. It runs cleanly under System 7 and remains compatible into Mac OS 8 and 9 via the 68k emulator on PowerPC hardware. There is no Carbon port, so OS X requires the Classic environment.
Preservation
The original author and shareware fee are not currently surfaced in the major Mac archive listings. The game survives chiefly through community re-uploads at sites like Macintosh Garden, with little of the original release documentation intact.
