Desktop Pets is a desk-accessory style novelty by Jonathyn Bet'nct of Kreative Software, released in 2001. It puts virtual pets that scamper across your Mac desktop, much like the classic Neko program that ran a cartoon cat after the mouse pointer on Windows and Unix systems.
What it does
The included pet is a cat that wanders the desktop autonomously, reacting to the cursor. The Info-Mac release shipped in three flavors: a 68k build, a PowerPC build, and this Desktop Pets X variant for the Mac OS X classic-compatible environment.
Custom pets
The author noted that additional pets and characters can be created with any paint program and dropped into the application, making the program a small platform for user-made critters rather than a fixed cast.
Provenance
Released as freeware in 2001 by Kreative Software, a division of Kreative Korporation, and archived to Info-Mac as desktop-pets-x.hqx.
