Avadon’s graphics needs are modest, but they might put some strain on older machines. Fortunately, Avadon has been tested and shown to run properly on even relatively old machines. However, some steps might be necessary to help it to run better on older hardware. To see how quickly Avadon is running, load a saved game, press Shift-D, enter "fps", and press return. The FPS (frames of animation drawn per second) will appear in the upper left hand corner. That number should be at least in the teens to give a good playing experience. Avara Level Design Manual version 1.0.0 docs.com copyright ©1995-1996, Juri Munkki http://www.replacement Introduction One primary consideration in the Avara design has always been to make level editing as easy as possible. No special purpose level editors are necessary, although they are quite possible to write, if standard tools are not available. Avara is a set of tools for producing several different kinds of networked games. The design is 100% object oriented, so it is easy for us to expand it, yet remain compatible with existing levels. Avara level design may seem complicated at first, because there are so many parameters that you can change. The key is that you don't have to change them if you don't want to. Start by just using the default object parameters and then explore the possibilities by changing the parameters one by one. Level Directory Files Avara levels are defined as PICT files or resources. ClarisWorks™ is the recommended program for designing Avara levels, but other programs may also be used, as long as they create similar PICT files. To use PICT files, you need a level directory file where the level you edit has been declared to exist in a file. The level file has to be in the same folder as the level directory file. To use PICT resources, the level directory file must indicate that the level is loaded from a resource and the resource must be placed in the level directory file and named correctly. Level files (PICT files) are recommended for debugging and trying out levels and level resources (PICT resources) are recommended for shipping or distributing levels after they have been fully developed and debugged. With PICT files, you don't even have to quit Avara to make a change to a level. Just open the directory file into Avara and every time you make a change, reload the level from the file by clicking on it. Resources The level directory file contains one 'LEDI' resource with a resource id of 128. This resource serves as a directory to all the levels this file contains or accesses. In addition to this resource, the file may contain any number of 'BSPT' (Binary Space Partitioned Tree) resources for describing object shapes and any number of 'HSND' resources for compressed sounds. The only required resource is the 'LEDI' resource. If the following paragraphs seem difficult to grasp, don't worry: you may not need the informaton. 'BSPT' resources are created from DXF (AutoCAD™ drawing exchange file) files by running them through the BSPSplitter program and the BSPViewer program. Colors for 'BSPT' resouces are defined in a ColorLib file where DXF layer names are mapped into RGB (red, green, blue) colors. The BSPViewer program can be used to verify that visible surfaces are correctly defined in an object and correct the faults, if…

ocs.com http://www.replacementd _________________________ Documentation by Jack “Orvis” Lawrence and “Cajun” David Richard Special thanks to Andrew Welch and Ms. Howard ©1996 by Ambrosia Software Avara Documentation Page 1 Welcome to Avara Once again, Berserkir sat, licking his wounds and nursing his pride. An unsavory defeat against his nemesis, Achilles, had left a bitter taste in the haughty warrior’s mouth. Under a furrowed brow however, Berserkir’s thoughts dwelt upon revenge, not defeat. Time would pass and again, at Mount Stonehammer they met. Two warriors, side by side, walking with the purposeful countenance that only the spectre of death could imbue. The trees were still. The birds were quiet. Even Father Wind held his breath in silent anticipation of the struggle that would shake the very mountaintops. Focusing on all the training he had endured and with strong will and determination, he conquered the mighty Achilles. Father Wind breathed a sigh of relief as the battle ended, carrying the soul of Achilles on the heels of his autumn breeze. Are you prepared for battle? Are you ready for Avara? With its fast and furious action and unique 3D game play, you can’t help but be absorbed in the game. Avara’s real-time graphic action will start your heart pounding as you see your opponent gracefully bound across the terrain and quickly swoop in behind you. Using both the mouse and keyboard, you have complete 360 degree control to counter-maneuver and quickly target your enemy. Players aren’t limited to “sliding” around in predetermined mazes like in many of the older 3D games. Avara’s maneuverability is unique, allowing its warriors to freely climb, jump, and run on any of the structures in the battlefield. Add to this Avara’s networkablity, and the game gets even more interesting. Avara allows you to meet and play against people from all around the world, right over the Internet. Develop your skills and strategy in the many solo levels, and when you are ready, access the Avara Internet Tracker to locate worthy opponents. The Tracker offers users a continually updated list of Avara games in progress all over the net. Avara can also be played across LAN (Local Area Network) connections, for those not brave enough to step out into the maelstrom of Internet battle. With Avara, you are also able to design your own battlefields. The only limiting factor to your gaming experience is your imagination. Using the objects and structures that are provided, and an easy-to-follow manual, designing levels for Avara is a snap. You will never get tired of Avara due to this expandability; it is a game that is always growing. New and exciting levels, from those who want to show off their creative and imaginative accomplishments, will spread all over the Internet. About This Manual This manual assumes that you are familiar with the Macinto…

Avid Cinema U3 Beta Readme This Readme explains who should use the Avid Cinema U3 "Beta" extension, what a "Beta" release means, what the Avid Cinema U3 extension fixes, and how to install it over the Web. Who should use this Avid Cinema extension? The Avid Cinema U3 extension is for Avid Cinema customers with Power Macintosh 8600/ 250 or 8600/300 computers, or for Avid Cinema customers who have upgraded their computer with Apple's 233 mHz processor Upgrade card. The Avid Cinema U3 "Beta" extension is a new version of the Avid Cinema extension for these machines, which replaces the old Avid Cinema extension installed in the Extensions folder. What is a "Beta" release? A "Beta" version of a file is one that has not been officially released. It has shown sufficient stability to warrant an early release to the public, but it is not a finished product. If you have a Power Macintosh 8600/300, 8600/250, or 233 mHz upgraded computer, you should read this entire readme before installing the new Avid Cinema U3 extension to understand the issues Avid Cinema has found in its testing. What the Avid Cinema U3 extension fixes: Previously, if you installed Avid Cinema on a Power Macintosh 8600/250 or 8600/ 300 computer, or on a computer that was upgraded with Apple's 233 mHz upgrade card, you would experience problems capturing video, applying effects, and playing your movie. Installing the Avid Cinema U3 extension fixes these problems. Avid Cinema may show the following behavior with this U3 extension installed: •Importing NTSC format video clips into PAL format movies will look grainy and may not play smoothly. • If you copy a single video frame from a title and paste it into the title track, it may -1- not render. • If you view a clip in Preview mode in the Library tab, the viewer will display a blank frame until you scroll through it or start to play it. • If you launch Apple Video Player while Avid Cinema is running, the viewer in Avid Cinema will show black. Switching to another tab and back again will bring the video image back. • In PAL format movies, if you record several clips of video in rapid succession, you may receive an error message, "There was an error bringing video in. Make sure that your video preferences (NTSC or PAL) are set correctly." If you wait one second between capturing clips, you will not get this error. • Preparing titles may occasionally produce an error (-32767) or in rare cases, you may experience a system crash. • In rare cases, the Bring Video In tab viewer may lose its video display when switching tabs, deleting clips from the Library, or cycling power from the video deck or camera. Switching to another tab and back again will bring the video image back. • If you view a clip in Preview mode in the Library, and you switch to the Bring Video In tab while the clip is playing, your clip may stutter when you attempt to preview it again. Clicking stop and then play wil…
