Here are a few tips for getting this most from this stack: • You can use the Bookmarks menu to bookmark your favorite cards. • Press Command-Period if you wish to stop a card's music or animation. • This stack hides the Desktop, but you can change that on the Help/Preferences card. • The cards have been arranged to create a nice assortment of styles throughout the stack, but an alphabetical list is available by clicking the Index button. • Some cards have features that aren't immediately obvious, so don't rush. 1. The bookmarks don't work. The bookmark feature won't work if this stack is on a locked volume (such as a CD) or if the stack itself is locked in the Get Info box. 2. None of the cards appear in color. This stack contains both color and black-and-white cards, but if none of them appear in color: a) Make sure that you are using HyperCard 2.1 or later (version 2.3 or later is strongly recommended). b) You should allocate at least 2500K to HyperCard in the Get Info box. Here's how: Quit this application, click on HyperCard's icon (the icon for HyperCard, not the icon for this stack), select Get Info from the File menu, and type "2500" (or more) in the box for Preferred Size. If you're still having problems, check to see if you have more than one version of HyperCard on your Mac (you can use the Find feature to track down all the copies). You might have increased the RAM for one copy of HyperCard, but another one is actually being used when you launch this stack. 3. How can I stop a card's music or animation? Press Command-Period. 4. What are this stack's system requirements? We recommend that you use HyperCard 2.3 or later with at least 2500K of memory allocated, a color monitor, System 7.0 or later, and have system software to enable speech. 5. Can this stack be viewed using versions older than 2.3? First of all, remember that the newest HyperCard Player can be downloaded for free from Apple. But to answer the question, most cards in this stack will probably function properly with HyperCard 2.2, but you'll run into problems if you try to view it with older versions.

OVERVIEW Welcome to SoftPaint. Using SoftPaint should be intuitive. Most of the menus and tools are standard items you have probably seen in several other programs already. The way these tools are used may be a little different, but those differences should be easy to understand. If you do need help, this help window is available at any time. File Menu The File Menu ------------------- • New ( Command N ) “New” will create a new window and allow you to start working on the new document. If you run out of memory when attempting to create a new document, you will be alerted and the new document will not be created. • Open ... ( Command O ) “Open” brings up a dialog box which will allow you to open a document from a file saved previously to disk. As with New, if you run out of memory when attempting to open a document, you will be alerted and the document will not be opened. • Close ( Command W ) “Close” will close the current window. If it has not been saved since the last change, it will give you the opportunity to save the document before closing. • Save ( Command S ) “Save” will save the current document to any disk. • Save As ... “Save As” will bring up a dialog box which will allow you to save the current document under a new name. • Save as MacPaint ... “Save as MacPaint” will bring up a dialog box which allow you to save the current document as a MacPaint document. • Revert “Revert” allows you to quickly return to the last saved version of a document. • Document Size “Document Size” is a hierarchichal menu which allows you to select between a Portrait (8 x 10) and a Landscape (10 x 8) page size. File Menu • Page Setup ... “Page Setup” allows you to set up the page alignment. With the LaserWriter Page Setup allows you to scale the entire page. • Print ... ( Command P ) Prints the current document. High quality and standard quality are supported. Draft quality is not supported (draft printing only works with text files). The LaserWriter has a different sized page than the ImageWriter, so a section along the right side of the document will not be printed unless you select “96%” or less from “Page Setup.” • Print Selection ... This will print the current selection. The selection will be printed in the upper left corner of the page regardless of its location within the document. • Quit ( Command Q ) Obviously. 2 Edit Menu The Edit Menu ------------------- • Undo ( Command Z ) “Undo” is fully supported in SoftPaint. • Cut ( Command X ) “Cut” will cut the selection from the window and place it in the clipboard.
