Gaming console collecting is mainstream acceptable. Almost anyone with a home theater/bonus room seems to be envious of those who have one a/o are actively looking for one or a few. Gaming consoles are retro-cool, but it's "just weird" to collect enough "old computers" to fill the cubic of a single gaming cabinet . . .

Well, a lot of my spare project time is being taken by an arcade project. I'm building a replica "Fix It Felix Jr." cabinet as featured in Disney's Wreck It Ralph.
I have the cabinet plans, custom vinyl graphics, about 2/3 of the hardware pieces, the monitor and the computer hardware all set. The game (original leaked Disney version) is booting invisibly and working well with the arcade controls wired up on a temporary control panel. Now all that's been shook out, I can start cutting MDF and putting the thing together.

Wear a really good dust mask cutting that stuff, it's sometimes referred to as the new asbestos.

i think this is one of the reason my dad decided to have kids.

I bought it as a package from ArcadeSkins (RidicRick). I didn't have any desire to reinvent the wheel with hours in Illustrator when someone else already did it for us.
Smart. I never could get Kinkos to print me a 2/3 scale Galaga marquee back when I built a mini for the kids. Stupid copyright laws...

I met up with volvo242gt at the big Volvo swap in Portland today where he had brought a II GS down for me. Maybe now I can get my old one running again. Thanks a million for bringing it down! I had intended on cruising back by and chatting for a few but I got a call from my wife telling me our younger kid was headed to urgent care so I had to split back home.
On the way up, I stopped off at a garage sale in Salem where I bought a Flower Power iMac for $15 ! w007!

Well, you only ever get a really great score once every year or so. This is one of the best two I've ever gotten. Both have ended up with the start of a geek friendship at the end.
Cut to the chase, I ended up heading over the Cascades and meeting up with the guy advertising the ANS 700. He turned out to be a really neat guy and we chatted it up for three hours or so. He also happened to have worked at Apple for a couple of stints in the 1990s which meant he had all sorts of crazy stuff. He was very generous to me and I ended up getting a number of unique items:
I think the most unique was the PowerBook 500 prototype. The open window is so they could swap in the firmware du jour. Note the coloring is light. No idea on specs yet. I hope to start snooping through these tomorrow.

Holy moses and plus some! That's an epic conquest Dylan! That prototype is really interesting, does it run? The ANS 700 is really neat, getting really difficult to find those babies. Waiting for pictures on you site of the inner pats of that.

I can't believe I had been keeping an eye out for Kangas for years and had never seen one. Then jt kindly sends one out to me and two weeks later I get a second. In the same vein, I hadn't ever seen a Flower Power in the flesh until yesterday when I bought one. I stop by the Goodwill computer store today and what's sitting on the shelf in back? Yep, a Flower Power. What the heck is going on?

Congratz McD, I couldnt make it so I am glad you got it all. Im not even gonna say I am jealous but being sick and car issues this weekend I guess we all have to do what we gotta do. Car is fixed, I am still coughing but at least I am smiling knowing you got the stuff. I received the duo feet also by the way. I appreciate that.

From the looks, the Umax is an S900.
That is something in between an 8500 and 9500 clone.
It has six PCI slots. No on-board video, so it is like a 9500 in that regard. However, the lower four PCI slots (slots 3 - 6) are controlled by a PCI-PCI bridge chip installed in place of PCI slot 3, instead of having their own Bandit chip.
So, a normal 9500 has two Bandit chips and they control slots 1 - 3 and slots 4 - 6 respectively.
And S900 has a single Bandit chip, which would ordinarily control just slots 1 - 3 (like an 8500). However, in the S900, slot 3's connection to the Bandit chip is usurped and the upstream side of a DEC 21052 chip is connected there. Then the downstream side of the PCI-PCI Bridge chip is used to create slots 3 - 6.
If you try to install a card which has its own PCI-PCI bridge (such as a USB/FW card) in slots 3 - 6 the machine will likely lock up at a black screen after the start-up chord. However, there are a lot of caveats to that which I'm not going to cover in depth. The main one is that the above configuration will work, provided there are no other cards in slots 3 - 6. Other conditions apply.
The S900 also has a second CPU slot for Umax secondary processor card, which supported their dual 604e configurations. And there's a jumper position (or an actual jumper) on the logic board which will disable the logic board L2 cache -- handy for G3 cards with their own on-board L2 cache.
Oh, and front and back sound ports which are nice, until you try to install the logic board in a different case.
The case is interesting. It is a Palo Alto Products ATCX Convertible. This case was also used by Micron and Dell in various models, with their own Bezels. The same case is also used in the Desktop Umax J700 model. By switching the bezel and the bottom/right panel of the case, and by unscrewing and rotating the internal drive cage, the case changes from a tower to a desktop.
The J700 logic board is identical to the S900 except it lacks the secondary CPU slot (connector is missing) and two of the lower four PCI slots. If the connectors are soldered into place, the J700 gains the same functionality as the S900.

Yes I've checked everything out now and it has a single, 200 MHz 604e and a TwinView video card in it.
I figured they used the same case manufacturer as it was very similar to one of the Dells I used as my Windows workstation at an old job 12-13 years ago. Thanks for all the information. The amount of mental notes you carry around is always surprising!

The universal monitor stand from the Mac II era (base is the same size as the Iicx/IIci)
Trash - the monitor I grabbed was a ColorSync 17" display. He had a 20"(?) early monitor but the case was cracking bad enough it was falling apart. Added to the fact that I still needed to get my kids back in the car, I left it where it lay.
EDIT: maybe someone can answer this but I read everywhere that AIX 4.1.5 is the last OS. He gave me an AIX 4.1.6 for ANS install disc. What's with that?
