@ uni: I hated the look of from first sight on a magazine cover when it was released. The Takky gang over on 'fritter almost got me over that disdain. The ONLY thing I ever really liked about the CC was that you could shove the drawer of 6500 in there to give it a two-slot G3 @$$!

It is, that's all that just works. Doing the TAKKY Hack of any non-500 Series AIO is in an entirely different category.

I wound up doing a good part of that same hack to a 550(?) in order to paint it black as a G3MacTV. I find the MacTV to be marginally more ugly than the CC, but that the CC's pathetic little 10" Trinitron is merely the waste of a perfectly good TV/Tuner. MoBo and Accelerator.

The 605 Mobo practically identical to the Classis/Plus in width and almost exactly half as much less in length than the Classic's mMoBo is, as compared than the Plus MoBo.

IOW, you're good to go.

I am rearing to try this too, with the following variations:

280c screen, which should fit, unlike the 2300c screen. It is a nicer screen anyway.

2300c logic board

CF drive ATA

DuoDock innards for Nubus support

Floppy replaced by scsi zip drive

Questions:

  • Can anyone confirm that the 280c LCD will work with a 2300c logic board?
    Could the Zip drive run from the internal SCSI at the same time as the ATA CF drive, or would it need to be taken from the Dock's SCSI port?
    Is an alternative to the notoriously unreliable duodock ps possible?

The 2300c MoBo was designed to be a drop in replacement for every Duo ever made. So, yes, theoretically, but I've yet to try it.

I don't see why not, but I can hook an HDD on each bus and give it a whirl.

In over twenty years of using multiple DuoDocks, I've only ever needed to do the well documented, easily done repair for that "notorious" reliability issue once.

Then again, it is the strangest form factor I've yet to run across for a PSU.

I saved a couple of Dock Boards and PSU wire harnesses from the recyclers (thanks again whoever you are!) for doing just this sort of thing, that's what I'll be doing.

Are you looking into doubling the DuoDock board back upon the Duo Mobo to reduce the footprint? I've been looking at that right alongside flipping the NuBus Slots around to the other side as well.

Since I don't have a working CRT for the ZipMacPLUS™ to drive, maybe I'll tag along on this Classic Hacking Spree!

Actually in retrospect there is a standard 50 pin SCSI connection on the Dock logic board, so the one in the Duo, which would presumably be slower, is immaterial.

On the question of the ps, what I would really want to be able to do is use a fanless ps, and as I have had Duo power supplies die repeatedly on me, a replacement would be doubly welcome. Would something like an LC ps work, perchance?

The duodock logic board itself is a mere 7.5 x 7", plus the nubus attachment, of course, so maybe that doubling back would not be needed. I don't know. The Duo's itself I do not have handy to measure. I haven't done measurements in the Classic case, either. I am not a habitual hacker like some around here, and in fact I like my machines stock.

I have been thinking about this, though, not so much as a hack, but mostly from the point of view of using it as a hypercard station. What I am proposing would be perfect for it. Not many of us hear talk about that fabulous program, but it IS fabulous, and much more powerful than it lets on. Running it on a little machine like this would be perfection.

I thought the 280c and 2300c had the same screen. What's better about the 280c's?

Would a duodock mini work better than a full sized duodock since your space will be limited?

The 280c screen is a little smaller than the 2300c -- which could be a problem or a gift, depending on how things worked out with the bezel. But there is more of the screen hidden behind the plastics of the 280c bezel, so a fit in a Classic/ Compact case seems possible.

The two screens used different technologies. I think the 280c was called a "parallel" screen, but don't quote me on that. However, you can use a 280c outdoors without backlighting, which you can't with the later, conventional LCD of a 2300c, 540c, etc.. The earlier screen technology used in the 280c also looks much more like a CRT than an LCD. While it is a smaller screen, text on it is crisper than it is on the 2300c.

I just did some more measurements. The visible part of a 280c screen is a little smaller than the bezel of a Classic by about 1/2": 6 3/4" x 5 1/8" on the 280c versus 7 1/4" x 5 9/16" on the Classic bezel. This would allow for a black edge around the screen, i suppose, but what the hack would look like in practice is hard to predict. The visible part of a 2300c screen, for its part, is larger than the Classic bezel by about the same margin.

The 2300c logic board, if RAM and modem are included, is 10" x 5" (that is not exact, but it's a pretty close measurement -- I'd have to disassemble the whole machine to get a better one). The Classic shell would give you roughly 12 3/4" height x 9 1/4" width max., x approx. 10" depth (less on the bottom and the top because of the cutouts).

Without actually trying the assembled boards in the case, it looks like the two logic boards could fit if put together vertically, though where ports etc would lie is another question. You'd have something like 12" to 12 1/2" total between the two assembled boards, with the option of unplugging the modem board in order to negotiate tight corners/ angles. So the case gives you round about enough room to play with. Where the Nubus adapter would lie is another question. It's been years since I disembowelled a DuoDock, so I can't remember. But I have two of them here.

A microdock would be a much easier solution. It might be the only solution, in fact, since I am not sure that the Duo logic board can output video to its LCD when connected to a full-sized Dock! It may well be set to sleep, or it may well come on in the Dock, but you can't tell with the design. Certainly the screen continues to work with a microDock. But the guts of a full Dock arrangement would have significant advantages if it could be made to fit and work: two Nubus slots, more RAM (standard 72 pin, could theoretically take a 128MB SIMM), onboard SCSI, etc.

I am encouraged enough to ponder having a quick and dirty go at assembling something for fit over the coming weekend.

The only piece of my puzzle that I have at the moment is the Classic. I'm tempted to sacrifice a Classic II and call it an upgrade. The boot-from-ROM of the Classic is too cool a trick to toss out :)

I've got a bid in on a 475 for parts. I'll see about whether the horizontal axis thing I was talking about is a real thing or my imagination. Looks like the power supply is a great size. Anybody know if its power molex pinout is the same as the classic by any chance? That'd be too easy.

The screen is really the sticking point. We'll see what I can find. There's only a couple things on eBay at the moment, and I'm not encouraged by any of them. One's CGA; one doesn't list its connection type. I'll have to keep an eye out at the Surplus Exchange this weekend.

For video, would the best thing be to unsolder the 15 pin video connector, and replace it with a upward facing (or dongled) VGA port?

Where the Nubus adapter would lie is another question.

I mean, don't get me wrong: I fully endorse and encourage such madness. Thing is, even with an LCD and mounting everything vertically, you won't get a full-length 12" Nubus card into a classic-boxmac shell.

Now, there are plenty of useful 7" Nubus cards ... but given the preference for a CRT, and everything -else- you want to squeeze in there, I'm ahhh let's say, a little doubtful?

Reading back through the thread, I saw that I misspoke: I am committed to a CRT not an LCD for this idea. I'm looking now for 9" tube monochrome svga monitors to hack into this.

We'll see if this ever gets past the collecting-the-parts stage. That's where a lot of my projects die.

In fact, on closer inspection (took apart the screen), it seems that the 280c LCD would not fit without being a trifle off-centre. It would need to be about 3/8" or even 1/2" shifted to the right because of the location of circuitry and metal casing on the panel at the left. And that is allowing for the cutting away of plastics on the Classic front bezel's interior.

That for me probably means that my proposed hack is not going to be done, since I would end up destroying a machine for one that would not look exactly right. But I will ponder some more. I think I have a failed lcd panel to take apart in order to see if it is possible that any of the stuff in the way could be relocated just a smidgeon in order to allow for the panel to be properly centred.

Then it'd be Nubus in a Compact shell or bust!

I was pleasantly surprised to find that the 2300c MoBo can be sandwiched between the solder sides of the Dock's Logic board and the nearest of the two NuBus Cards. I wasn't expecting that, but I'd be very careful trying to implement it in that configuration.

The only really important thing about this hack, other than getting the LCD to fit . . .

. . . is that little white LCD connector and its proximity to a 2300c LCD that's pointed in the correct direction, at the correct distance from the assembly.

The LCD Cable is the most un-hackable thing of all! :-/

Yep, but you have to disable the Declaration ROM in the Dock, which leaves you with NuBus, ADB and not a lot else. I'm trying to get the MiniDock Rom Burned in a format I can use in the Docks I and Plus, I'm not sure I've ever had a DockII for comparison.

The MiniDock and DuoDock are so similar that the DeclROM might be universal. About the only thing the DuoDock has that the MiniDock doesn't is NuBus, which doesn't even need DeclRom Support, it's directly wired to the 2300c's PBX bridged 68030 PDS/Docking Connector, part of the Duo itself.

The DuoDock Logic Board is a Slot Manager addressed, multifunction Expansion Card defined by the DeclROM. I know it sounds inside out, but it really is!

Whatever, I've been toying with the notion of adding NuBus to the MiniDock for over ten years now.

Scuppers my plan, and there I had more or less figured out how to centre the lcd.... Could maybe be done with a microdock, but I don't have one of those.

The pds connector would not be easy to turn 180 degrees, to say the least.

Ehh, I guess my ideas are more acquired tastes then, hehe. I just kinda' liked how it all lined up like that. Nametag style looks alright though, I'm more interested in the Compact case. :3

A non-Duo 2300c display can fit on a 2300c logic board if the CPU copper shield is carefully modified to permit the new display connector to fit.

MicroDocks -- ah those. I don't see non-FDD microdocks much. NetDocks -- ah those are a rarity.

If you need a smaller monochrome display, a Duo 230 display is pretty close to the proportions of the Classic monitor.

Are you aware of another user who made a post on stuffing a mac mini inside a Classic and using a special 9" 1024x768 VGA display? He made a special vacuum formed plastic cover that conforms to the shape of the original CRT and then stuffed the LCD behind that. Neat project.

Here is the mod I did to my 230/100's CPU shield to get the Duo 230 connector to work. AFAIK only the 2300c uses the white one. I'd like to get rid of the yucky application of electrical tape (it doesn't bond very well) but it's not a concern at the moment since the future of the unit is uncertain (don't know what to do with it).

I will bet that the 2300c Upgrade option had a different CPU shield there with a proper cutout but Good Luck finding those around.

Also FYI the CPU stiffener is a vital heatsink for the CPU. If you are doing it as you envision I'd put a good heatsink on there. The CPUs (including the 230) have a heatpad between the CPU stiffener and the CPU -- not compound because if you wanted to upgrade to the 14.4Kbps modem you have to take the whole thing down to the bare logic board.

You had me wondering for a bit there, but I can now confirm that the internal SCSI does indeed function at the same time as the Lame@$$ IDE HDD implememtation. I set up that B@R#@$$#D 2300c MoBo to boot from the IDE HDD with a nice SCSI HDD stacked on top of it. The SCSI drive's Icon popped right up underneath the boot drive icon!

Better news was that I got an LCD/Lid that I thought was good hooked up and it didn't work . . . then discovered it was working, but the backlight or the controller baord for it was playing possum. Gotta Crack it open, meanwhile, I need to fine the borked LCD and try to klugify one unit that'll work in the Zippified Plus. To get that working it's necessary to take the metal frame off and bend the sidecar board back on an angle to clear the Compact's inner plastics.

You had me going because I was planning to use the internal SCSI to interface with the IDE interface in another hack. I'd like to put one of my MicroEN/SCs into the HDD bay of a 2300cTB alongside with some kind of nice roomy solid state drive adapter combo. [:)] ]'>
