Removing it if it's socketed, or snipping the (IIRC) chip enable pin if it's not.
If it became necessary, I would suggest having a male-to-female flat flex cable (FFC) extender made up. On the other hand, it may be easier and more reliable to make up extensions for other connections, such as Duo->Dock, Dock->Gemini, or even Gemini->Nubus. Then one has a bunch of other options for re-arrangement.
How does the Duo->Dock connection work in that arrangement?

I don't think 4:3 would look substantially better. Either way, any portrait screen looks like an Alto to me (or, painted black, a Vectrex). Plus the plastic hacking would be nightmarish... all those angles *shudder*.
Yesterday, surfing the old threads, I found this: http://myoldmac.net/share/RC07/MacClassicII_256grayscale.php which is almost exactly the hack I imagined, minus the facelift. Of course joining in on the Mac hacking 20 years late means nothing I dream up is going to be original.
Can't decide between the Apple 12" grayscale hack above, or finding a 9" grayscale monitor to shove in. Either way I'll have to figure out how to get the video signal off of the board, which means soldering - at which I am possibly the worst. I hate soldering, but if I'm gonna try stuff like this I guess I better learn
Do you happen to know what the image quality is like on these screens? They do offer some interesting possibilities if the resolution is adequare for text.

Another panel option: the iPad first gen LCD 9.7" 1024x768 and you just know it's a good screen. One or other of the stores I've mentioned has suitable controllers.

The iPad does have a very nice display but how is it going to be driven? Reverse engineering?
I really hate to say this, but with the iPad in there . . . you really don't need a real computer inside the Compact Case. :-/

That's when you rig up a arduino to convert ADB signals to bluetooth! or better yet RJ45 keyboard and DB9 Mouse to bluetooth!

. . . a Zip should probably be mounted in the black band along with modern I.O.instead of a the DVD Hack I've already done.

. . . underneath that could be a nice cozy spot for an ubuntuAtomicMacHack™ of the long homeless Atom NetTop board . . .

Personally I would be inclined to find a display that fits inside the default bezel area -- no fancy cutting procedures + cleanup required. And you'll get about the same output anyways -- if you had 7.6.1, which is what my Duo 230/100 runs, you're not gaining much from 1024x768 over 800x600. 640x480 is as we know, perfectly usable in these older systems.

I've found something close to what I'd consider as a candidate for this 'PadHack, the Archos 80 G 9 seems to fit the bill for me.
It's tough to tell from the pics, but with a 4:3 1024 x 768 pixel 8" LCD, the image size should be 6.4" x 4.8" and very close to the size of the image of the 9" Periscope for playing period appropriate games and apps in color on my ZipPlus under minivmac. The left edge may protrude slightly in order to center the display, but that'll just make for convenient removal.
With the DuoDockMotor/Sliding MacQuarium Hack, I don't even need to buy the Tablet until prices for a used one hit rock bottom on eBay. A wooden stand-in with full color printed appliques will work just fine until then. It can lean that up against the side of the Macquarium/ubuntuAtomicX-MacHack™ for me to show off its Pad/Docking features for the nonce.
It'll be KVM'd to the 20" 1600x1200 LCD Pivot/NetBook Online WorkStation and get some of my pet plastic fish out of their shoe box and into water again at the same time! I can swap the hacked Zip's guts with the matching translucent USB Zip and mount the Laptop Slotloader DVD-RW and adapter under the chin. I'll need to make the clear plexi chassis act as a rain hat for the real goodies inside, just in case, but that's no biggie. It looks like I can leave one of the DOA A/Bs inside for looks and power switching.

It's somewhere around $250 new ATM, it has a standard USB Port for peripherals.
I'd rather have the MacQuarium anyway, that and the Atom NetTop board running ubuntu are really the only useful the added complexity of the DuoDockingPad is an added bonus for me. This is what I do for a hobby, it's not suupposed to make sense . . .

I would like to know a little more about what might be involved in altering a DuoDock's DeclROM, rather than disabling it altogether (so losing most of the very functionality of the DuoDock that I'd want to add). I know almost nothing about this sort of thing, so forgive the following if it sounds stupid.
Whatever switches off the screen in the DeclRom would need changed (maybe as simple as changing a line of code from an =No to an =Yes?). But how do you access that code and how might you go about changing it permanently?
If this is for the hacking/ coding athlete only, and requires serious equipment and know-how, then that in itself would be useful to know, as I will then cheerfully be able to give up on the whole business, reassemble my 280c and 2300c, and get on with other things.

bbraun is doing work related to DeclROM creation and Hackin' in his ongoing quest to gain full understanding of ROM hacking opportunity. If he doesn't show up here, pop him a PM, you might be able to search some info in wild scheme topics of mine in this regard.

That's about the size of it, I'm afraid.
Though I do recall from Trash80's previous experiments that one can add a jumper or switch to the cut pin on the DeclROM IC, so you can switch the added functionality on and off between reboots.
Yep piccie on the previous page. I hacked the power pin, your suggestion of hacking chip select is more elegant. I've been meaning to rewire it to one of my 143 Dip switches and hot glue that to the top of the ROM, but haven't gotten around to it, the jumper works fine.

Well, I'm on my way. Just won a Performa 460. Looks like I'll be starting with a Classic III+ instead

You should just form a panel one out of styrofoam and then have it cast.
Now that would be an interesting hack - a combination of a Mac Classic and a TAM ... a Flat Mac for the rest of us

phpBB search leaves a bit to be desired... I wound up just starting on page 6 of the hacks board and reading toward the present. Page 5 was eye opening for my proposed hack.I'll figure something out after I do the case mod maybe it'll have to spend a while longer as a Classic II on the inside.

Searching anything with the tools here is the absolute pit. I have to wade through incredible amounts of dreck to find something when I KNOW the terms that should find it because I freakin' wrote it!
I'm getting tempted to make it a what-the-color-classic-should've-been with the tiny svga monitor that just arrived on my doorstep yesterday... I'd have to do some ugly back of the case modding though to fit the longer tube.
I'll keep my eyes open for Apple 12" mono monitors just in case. Hate to be stuck with the low resolution though.
I hope I don't have to resort to an LCD. That just feels like too far from the original idea. There's no point to the top 50% of the case without a tube in there.
