pismo ethernt port..
ok, something weird is going on. i can access my college website, but when i try ANY other site, it either 'times out' or takes a while to connect, kinda receives data in spurts. anyone know whats going on?
i never had this problem last semester, but then i never had an ipod either, so the firewire port was never in use. could that have a role to play in this debacle?
its certainly not the ethernet cable, cause i tried it with two different cables, and two different locations even... same problem.
also i have net monitor, and i see data being RECEIVED constantly. even when there's no application running.
i'm using 10.1.4, but that cant be the cause, it exists in OS 9 as well.

Just a shot in the dark, but I had the same problem. We have to register our network adapters' addresses. They reset them over the summer, and I had to re-register them. Do you have some system like that at your college?
And no other Mac users on campus have this problem? What about PC users?
The fact that you can access the college's own website tells me that your link to their network is just fine, and that their link to the Rest Of the Internet is bad.

nooo, that cant be the case, cause the computers in the lab work just fine. in fact i'm in there right now cause the network in my room wont work. damn thing.

Try using "Network Utility" to ping "google.com" or other major hosts. Beware of sites that block the ping port, though.
If you get a response from any other site, your university's connection is fine. If you don't, try pinging "64.81.72.2". If that works, it means your DNS servers are down. If that's the case, try restarting. If you still can't get to a lot of Internet sites, go into your System Preferences and set that IP to be your DNS server temporarily.

You ought to ask the dudes in the computer lab.

If you plug your PowerBook into an ethernet port in the lab, does it work?
If not, they may be using a proxy server. Check the PC's proxy settings, and if they're being used, try the same settings on your Mac.
I'm moving this to networking, since this isn't a PowerBook problem.
