How to install a usb card in my Performa 6360 ?
The logic board pulls out like a drawer. You will need the 2xPCI riser card that was stock with these machines, but apart from that, the required extensions should be in the stock 9.1 installation. Make sure anything usb related is activated in your Extensions Manager.

i use my p6360 to run some "old" midi audio sequencer programmes that when they were ported to OS X some of them died on the side of the road and others lost some of their features.
There is one particular midi/audio sequencer that Emagic and Roland developed to edit the Roland VS series of hard disk recorder. It was a step beyond the normal midi syncing. The Emagic programme Logic could be used to control the VS hard disk recorders especially used to edit the finished recordings on the VS rather then squinting at the LCD screen of the recorder ( albeit the LCD screen is fairly large on the VS ) it's the "paging" back and forth to make adjustments to volume, panning and twirlying a knob or punching the entry button. When Yamaha bought out Emagic and Apple joined forces with Yamaha to develop the Apple flagship midi/audio sequencer they gave up on Roland since Roland is a competitor of Yamaha. That's as best as i understand what happened between the three corporations.
Therefore I can't give up my P6360. The USB ports will help to make use of DVD burners and so on.

Just be aware that even if you install a USB 2.0 card, under Mac OS 9 it will still only perform at USB 1.1 speed (12 Mbps), since OS 9 does not support USB 2.0, and unfortunately, USB 1.1 is nowhere near fast enough to run a DVD burner. If you want to be able to run DVD burners and the like, look into getting a USB/FireWire card, since Mac OS 9 happily supports FireWire, which is more than fast enough (400 Mbps) to run DVD burners.

That card should work fine. Just keep in mind that no matter what card you buy, Mac OS 9 only supports USB 1.1 (12Mbps) and not USB 2.0 (480Mbps).
Logic has a long history going back to the mid 80s Atari 520 and 1040 home computers, when the program was called Notator. It has (with the appropriate add-ons) the ability to control a range of external devices, including hard disk recorders, like eg Yamaha's CBX series. It's not something exclusive to Roland and the VS AFAIK. And it was Apple who bought up Emagic, much to the dismay of PC Logic users.

Is there a software utility to check or setup drives for USB devices in OS 9? For example, i use DiskManager ( an old piece of software ) to scan, install drives and laucnh the scisi connected devices.

Does the card, and any attached device, at least show up in Apple System Profile or Norton's hardware rundown?

Very much frustrated here because Apple Profiler and Norton System Works for OS 9 can not see the card.
I have installed OS 9 ( using original apple installer for OS 9 ) and updated to 9.1.
Unable to update to OS 9.2 because installer says that my performa 6360 does not qualify.
I can't find any Belkin F5u005 drivers on the internet.
Any ideas how i can get this going?

When installing the F5U005-MAC in a PowerPC-based Macintosh® computer with PCI slots and without built-in USB ports, you must also install the Apple® USB Adapter Card Support extensions. These extensions may be downloaded from Apple®’s support web site at http://asu.info.apple.com.
• Users of Mac® OS version 8.5.1 should download USB Adapter Card Support version 1.2.
• Users of Mac® OS 8.6 and above should download USB Adapter Card Support version 1.3.5, or the most recent version provided on the Apple® support web site.
But since trying to find the official driver on the Net is like pulling teeth, my suggestion to you would be to forget the Belkin driver and just use Apple's USB Adaptor Card Support extensions, along with several of the other USB Support extensions that OS 9.1 provides. If you can't get the extensions installed, let me know and I'll copy them for you and send them to you via email. I've had no problems getting my USB card to work on my Power Mac 7500 and I think mine too is a Belkin; it looks awfully identical to your card, though.
Btw, do you have another computer, PC or Mac, that is on the Net and has a floppy drive? If so, use that when I go to send you any Mac resources.

My 8500 is web savy and it does have a floppy drive. More then often i burn to CD the stuff i want to install in my Performa6360. The Performa also has a burner via scsi.
I have a few applications that I use to determine or test if scsi devices are working. In fact one application can install a scsi drive for CD or hard drives connected via scsi. I was wondering if there is a similar software that can read the activity of a USB device or show that it is firing.

You are certain that this card is compatible with OS 9, and doesn't require special drivers?
Not really sure. I started off this question noting
in addition to all the information i provided and the information provided in turn.
It was noted that this said Belkin card F5U005 ( a card from those years ago ) would work. An off course Belkin are no longer accessible to provide drivers or comment about the compatibility of the card.
And, who knows maybe the guy that sent me the card may have damaged the card in some way because that happened to me before in an eBay purchase. I don't have enough know how to know how to test these boards.

I am going to send you the files via email tomorrow. One thing to note, though. You may want to try a "clean installation" of Mac OS 9.1, if you can. This has worked for me in the past. You won't have to wipe the hard drive to do this, but it would be a good idea, just in case. And make sure the Belkin card is plugged in before attempting a reinstall, so that the installer will see that you have a USB interface there and ready to go.

What is the version of your Mac OS 9 CD? If you have a Mac OS 9.1 retail CD, you can install that straight away, without any trouble.
If you have 9.0.0 or 9.0.4, you have to install that, and then run the Mac OS 9.1 Update.
If you have 9.0.0 or 9.0.4, you have to install that, and then run the Mac OS 9.1 Update.
I appear to have the "official" OS 9 and 9.1 installers.

OS 9.2.1 and 9.2.2 aren't supported on pre-G3 systems, you need OS 9 Helper to use those versions.
Out of curiousity, are you sure that the card is even any good? Have you tested it in another machine? At this point, I'd probably look at trying it in your 8500, or even a Windows PC if you have access to one.

No, not really sure that the card is even good: i was assured that the card is new and never used: although i have been badly stung in a similar purchase of some midi gear.
My 8500 already has a FireWire card and a USB card and i don't want to anger the gods by removing those cards and trying this one.
Hopefully Joe aka Phreakout emails me the USB extensions.
I'll just wait and if all fails walk it over to my local apple authorized repair guy and ask him to save the day AGAIN for this wanabe mac tech guy.
However it sure has me baffled why there is no response from the card or why apple's profiler or norton's system's works 9 fails to see the card although Conflict catcher 9 sees the drivers but no device.
Also perhaps i did not "install" the card correctly.

My rule of thumb is to use a known install disk that will for sure boot from startup. For example, in my case, I have only one Mac OS bootable installer; and that is version 8.6. My 9.1 installer apparently is one that was downloaded from Apple and someone (not me) just burned the contents to a CD. So, in order for me to put 9.1 on my Power Mac 7500, I have to boot the machine off of the 8.6 install CD, install 8.6, restart the machine to boot off the hard drive (with the newly installed 8.6), then put the 9.1 install CD in the drive and install 9.1 from there.
I'm gathering up the files now (copying them to my thumb drive off of the 7500) and you should be getting the email within the next hour. The files will be extensions that you will need to place on a floppy disk or CD and copy them over to the Extensions Folder of your Mac. Restart the Mac and then check Apple System Profiler to see if the card is finally recognized. If not, then I'd be suspicious that the card doesn't work on your Mac for some reason. Maybe it could be a dud at that point; who knows.

Before i go spending retirement money we don't have ( the wifey is already furious about this project on an old machine as she sezs ) do you guys think that perhaps resetting the CUDA switch may help wake up the computer to the fact that there is a USB PCI card installed ?
