Marathon Sounds

Marathon Sounds v2.0 is tedebair's Mac OS 8.5 system-sound theme that drops sound effects from Bungie's Marathon first-person shooter into the Mac OS alert-sound slot. Despite the info-mac/game/com/mthn path, this is not a game or Marathon mod - it is a presentation tweak for the Mac OS itself.

What it actually does

The author's own one-line pitch from the BinHex header: "This is the Marathon Sounds v2.0 for MacOS 8.5, using Sounds from the classic game Marathon to liven up your Mac." The package supplies a Sound theme installable through the Appearance control panel introduced in Mac OS 8.5, swapping the standard Platinum alert sounds for Marathon-derived effects.

Catalogue note - not a Marathon mod

This entry is distinct from the Maelstrom-Marathon Sounds add-on (which replaces Maelstrom's in-game sound effects with Marathon clips, archived separately as maelstrom-marathon-sounds.hqx). It is also distinct from any Marathon-engine level pack or net-map collection. The game/com/mthn classification on Info-Mac groups Marathon-related uploads, even non-game ones, together.

Compatibility and licensing

Mac OS 8.5 is the explicit target - earlier System versions lack the Sound theme infrastructure in the Appearance Manager. The author flags the unofficial status directly: "This file is in no way supported by Bungie, heck, I doubt they even know about it!" - a fan-curated repackage rather than an officially sanctioned theme.
