Compact Maps is a series of fan-made map packs for the Macintosh port of Wolfenstein 3D, distributed as Third Encounter scenarios. Each release bundles single-map missions with names like Carter & Lucy Eat Chicken, Fishin' With Gil, Je Suis Francais, and Luck Be a Lady Tonight, drawing on earlier scenarios such as Temple of Doom and Castle Wolfenstein.
Map-Pack Format
Rather than full episodes with new art and sound, the Compact Maps releases focus on tight, self-contained levels. Each pack drops a small set of standalone maps into the Mac Wolfenstein 3D engine, suitable for quick play sessions rather than long campaigns.
A Numbered Series
The Compact Maps line ran across multiple installments (Compact Maps 3, 5, 6, and others), with later entries credited to designers like Josh Mills. The numbering reflects the steady output of the Mac Wolf community in the late 1990s and early 2000s.
A Sibling to Other Custom Map Bundles
Compact Maps sits alongside other Mac Wolfenstein custom-map collections (such as the GASOFT custom map sets and Laz Rojas' commercial scenarios) that together formed the back catalog of fan content for Mac Wolfenstein 3D's Third Encounter format.
Preservation Status
Individual Compact Maps releases survive today through Macintosh Garden, Dermuda's Mac Wolfenstein 3D Archive, and the MacenWolf source-port project, which makes the original Mac scenarios playable on modern systems.
