Released in 1996 by Front for Graphic Simulations Corporation's F/A-18 Hornet 2.0 / 2.0.1 flight simulator, Hornet STRIKE! Missions is a 40-mission expansion pack adding 28 Kuwaiti-theatre combat sorties, 6 Arizona training missions, and 6 Hawaiian training missions, alongside dramatically reworked friendly and enemy AI.
Setting and theme
The combat missions drop the player into a near-future Persian Gulf flashpoint built around Iraqi targets in and around Basrah, including pumping stations, runways, and armoured columns. One scenario, "Illuminating Rita," was inspired by real-world No-Fly Zone enforcement events from September 1996. The training missions move the action to Arizona's bombing ranges and to Kahoolawe in the Hawaiian chain.
Gameplay
The pack is a 1st-person flight-simulation add-on; it requires the underlying F/A-18 Hornet 2.0 or 2.0.1 install. New mission types include B-52 escort ("Buff Protection"), coordinated runway-cratering with A-10 Warthogs and Durandal munitions ("Hog Handiwork"), Su-27 Flanker hunts over Iraq ("Flanker Fixit"), and a seven-ship Hornet alpha strike from the carrier ("Listen to Reason").
Training scenarios force night carrier qualifications in a damaged airframe ("Carrier Night Quals"), high-speed low-level bombing runs ("Low Leveler"), and rules-of-engagement intercepts against USAF F-16s.
Engine and technical changes
The expansion does not modify the underlying simulation engine but rewrites the wingman and enemy behaviour scripts. The new wingman "Hornet Two" carries four AMRAAMs and two Sidewinders per sortie, fires Mavericks at air defences, makes multiple bombing passes, uses afterburner, and stays on the player's wing - explicitly contrasted in the readme with the original Hornet 2.0 wingman who circled base while the player was shot down.
Development and release
Published by Front in 1996 for the Macintosh, the pack supplements Graphic Simulations Corporation's flagship F/A-18 Hornet simulator series, which began with the 1993 original and continued through 2.0 (1995), 2.0.1, and 3.0 (1996). It is preserved on Macintosh Garden as F/A-18 Hornet 2.0 (Strike! Missions).
Reception and legacy
The Strike! pack is remembered chiefly for fixing the Hornet series' notoriously passive wingman AI, an issue widely cited in the Mac flight-sim community of the period. It became the de-facto extended campaign for owners of F/A-18 Hornet 2.x before the engine moved to the 3.0 release.
