Down and Out 101 CB is the Carbon build of Tobias Peciva's pebble-clearing puzzle Down and Out, packaged so it runs natively on Mac OS X as well as on late Mac OS 9. The CB suffix marks the Carbon executable, distinguishing it from the earlier Classic-only PowerPC release of the same game.
What Carbon means here
Apple's Carbon API let Classic-era Mac applications be recompiled to run native on Mac OS X without rewriting them as Cocoa apps. CarbonLib also back-ported the API to Mac OS 8.6 and 9, so a Carbon build like 101 CB is dual-platform - native on OS X, supported on Classic with CarbonLib installed.
The game
Gameplay is unchanged from the original Down and Out: a grid of pebbles must be cleared by jump-capture moves in the peg-solitaire tradition, with the difficulty arising from planning sequences that do not strand isolated pieces.
Author
Tobias Peciva produced this Carbonised version to keep the game playable as users migrated off Mac OS 9 in the early 2000s.
Use today
Run it natively on a PowerPC Mac OS X system, under SheepShaver with CarbonLib, or by hosting Mac OS 9.2 with CarbonLib in a Classic-capable emulator.
