About

Fracas is a 1996 top-down arcade shoot-em-up for Classic Mac OS by Frank Kane of Cerberus Development, published by Midas Interactive. Players blast through level after level of monsters with varying intelligence and weaponry, accompanied by a sixteen-track stereo soundtrack the readme tells you to crank loud.

Gameplay

The action plays out from a fixed top-down view across action-packed stages. Enemies escalate in cunning and firepower as you climb the level list, and the game peppers each map with surprise hazards and pickups for replay value.

Soundtrack and Jukebox Mode

Audio is a centerpiece. Fracas bundles a multi-track score and exposes a hidden Jukebox Mode, opened by pressing J then B at the title screen, that lets players cycle through the soundtrack outside of combat.

Engine and presentation

Fracas was built on Ingemar Ragnemalm's Sprite Animation Toolkit and runs in 256-color mode, a common SAT constraint. Version 1.6 ships touched-up artwork, new music cues, and bug fixes over earlier releases.

System and distribution

The game targets 68k and PowerPC Macs running System 7.0 through Mac OS 9 and is friendly to Basilisk II emulation. Distribution is the usual Info-Mac shareware .hqx archive.
