The Monkey Shines Level Editor is the companion world-building tool for Fantasoft's mid-1990s arcade platformer Monkey Shines. It ships both standalone and bundled with the full game (v1.1.1 in the Info-Mac release), letting players craft the same red-key levels that the retail product is built from.
About Monkey Shines
Monkey Shines is a single-screen platformer from Fantasoft featuring a chimp protagonist who must collect every red key on a stage and reach the exit. The base package includes more than 140 levels and over 100 sprites across multiple themed worlds.
What the editor does
The editor is a tile-and-sprite painter for Monkey Shines worlds: place platforms, hazards, enemies, and the mandatory red keys, then save out a world file that the main game can load alongside its built-in stages.
Distribution and history
According to the original Fantasoft upload note, three artifacts were distributed together: the full Monkey Shines 1.1.1 package, a standalone updater for owners of earlier versions, and this level editor on its own. The game itself was shareware ($20); the editor travels with it.
Community content
Because the editor was bundled freely, a small ecosystem of user-made worlds circulated on Info-Mac and AOL through the late 1990s, extending the game well past its shipped level count.
