Maelstrom Ska Sounds is a fan-made sound replacement pack for Ambrosia Software's shareware classic Maelstrom, assembled by Colin Sevareid (signing off as Reverend Eleven). The mod swaps every original sound effect with clips lifted from the author's favorite ska records, giving the asteroid shooter a rude-boy makeover.
What the Mod Replaces
Every sound in the base game is overwritten, from shots and explosions to UI cues. The replacement clips are pulled from ska records by artists including The Specials, Let's Go Bowling, and the Voodoo Glow Skulls, among others.
A Quick Primer on Ska
The author's notes also serve as a brief evangelism: ska is described as a Jamaican dance style that predated reggae and was enjoying a punk-rock revival in the late 1990s. Readers are pointed at the alt.music.ska newsgroup and a contemporary Ska FAQ for further reading.
Memory Tuning Recommended
Because the new sound bank is substantially larger than Maelstrom's original audio, the author recommends raising the application's preferred memory size in the Get Info window. A figure around 5000K is suggested as a comfortable working ceiling.
Installation and Source
The pack was uploaded to the Info-Mac archive in August 1999 under game/arc as a BinHex-encoded distribution and is intended to be applied on top of an existing Maelstrom install rather than run on its own.
This file is part of the MacTrove archive. See the Thank You page for the upstream mirrors we rely on. It is BinHex encoded — use The Unarchiver to decode it.
