About

Blackjack Gold is a long-running shareware blackjack simulator from Gypsy King Software, distributed in parallel Macintosh and Windows builds since the late 1990s. This entry covers the original Classic Mac OS / early Mac OS X line: a casino-style 21 trainer with extensive rule customization, strategy testing, and card counting practice, pitched at players who want to mirror a specific real-world casino's house rules.

Gameplay

The table follows standard casino blackjack: the dealer hits to 17, the player can hit, stand, double down, split pairs, and (rule-dependent) surrender or take insurance. Up to seven seats can be filled at the table, each playable or computer-controlled, and bets are placed against configurable table minimums and maximums.

Customization

The defining feature is the depth of rule configuration. The player can set the number of decks, shuffle behavior (continuous shuffle vs. shoe), dealer soft-17 rules, double-after-split, surrender variants, and payout ratios for blackjack itself. Cosmetic options cover dealer voice and player avatars, letting users assemble a table that matches their home casino.

Strategy and counting

Beyond casual play, Blackjack Gold doubles as a training tool. Strategy testing prompts the player on basic-strategy decisions and flags deviations, and the counting practice surface tracks running and true counts so users can drill Hi-Lo or related systems against a real shoe. These features are why the game was repeatedly recommended in the late-1990s and 2000s blackjack-software guides.

Distribution and legacy

Gypsy King distributed the Mac build as shareware through their site (gypsyware.com), Mac download portals, and Macworld cover-CD bundles, where it was named a Mac Pick. The studio shipped Mac builds continuously from 1998 until announcing retirement in April 2022, after which registrations and tech support ceased. The Classic / early OS X version archived here predates the later Intel and Leopard-compatibility revisions tracked under separate version entries.
