About

Bezique is a freeware Macintosh implementation of the classic French/British two-player trick-taking card game, distributed in the 1990s through the Info-Mac archive as a StuffIt-compressed download. The program is reported as 32-bit clean and runs in roughly 300K of memory, making it comfortable on early color and grayscale Macs.

About the game

Bezique is a 19th-century European partnership/trick-taking card game played with two 32-card packs (the 7s through Aces of each suit). Players score by winning tricks containing certain cards and by declaring melds such as the namesake bezique combination of the queen of spades and jack of diamonds.

The Mac version

The Mac port packages a single-player-versus-computer experience using standard Mac toolbox controls. It was distributed as bezique.hqx, a BinHex-encoded StuffIt 1.5.1 archive on Info-Mac.

Compatibility

The build is described as 32-bit clean, indicating it should run cleanly under System 7 and later on machines that enforce 32-bit addressing.

Distribution

Bezique was a freeware release shared through Info-Mac and mirror sites, and is now preserved through the Macintosh Garden community.
